I’ve been telling my friends here at MIT that Iceland is one of the best countries I have ever visited. I can’t believe it’s been six months since I first set my foot on this island country. Being my parent’s only daughter, my father decided to treat me to a surprise trip to Iceland and my whole experience of staying in the country’s capital was awesome.
The flight from Boston to Iceland via Seattle for five days was awesome. We boarded Delta Air Lines, and the trip was absolutely in time. The staff members were also friendly. The only issue was the mandatory stop in Seattle which made the whole journey 5 hours longer. Otherwise, we arrived at Keflavík International Airport safely. We were received by our host who stays at an apartment in Reykjavik.
Iceland is not like any other. This island country dramatic landscape with lava fields, hot springs, geysers, and volcanoes defines its uniqueness and infinite beauty. The country offers all-friendly population, rich culture, amazing architecture and if you’re lucky to move in the remote areas, unexplored potential.
The weather is unpredictable
One thing I realized about the weather in Iceland is that it is unpredictable. We traveled during summer when the average temperature is between 10 degree Celsius and 13 degree Celsius. If you are lucky, you will have a few days with temperatures above 25 degree Celsius. I had read an article about the complete packing list for summer, so I carried some sleeping mask, swimsuits, flip-flops, a thermos, face lotion and lip balm. I didn’t use most of this stuff because I came to realize that summer is a relative term there.
Of course, traveling in winter or summer will give you completely different experience. There are some things you would enjoy all year long, and there are others you will enjoy during specific seasons. I traveled in summer, so I was able to do many activities such as attending the Perlan Museum Glacier & Ice Cave Exhibition among others. But for me, the best experience visiting Iceland was the time that we spend in the geothermal spa Blue Lagoon.
