When should you travel to Zakynthos? Definitely in any season. This island is famous for its fine sand beaches, blue and turquoise crystal water, spectacular cliffs and turtles. Here’s the list of the most famous bays to relax at in Zakynthos.
Navagio or Shipwreck beach, Volimes
Undoubtedly, Navagio beach is the most famous and spectacular beach in Zakynthos. It’s located in the north of the island and is also known as Shipwreck beach. It has an interesting legend that says that in 1981 during the pursuit on the water of a smuggling of cigarettes and women in combination with bad weather, the ship of the Greek authorities was brought to the shore of this beach. Taking this into account, the beach was also nicknamed the “Smugglers Cove“.
Besides its natural beauty, Navagio beach is also one of the most photogenic destinations in Greece. Keep in mind that reality beats a lot the virtuality. With fine and white sand, crystalline blue-turquoise water, Navagio Beach is totally worth the title of the most beautiful place in Zakynthos.
Taking into account that the beach is surrounded by rocks, access is only available by boat from Porto Vromi. They leave every 20 minutes to which is added the travel time tune of 20 minutes. If you’re passionate about adventure and photography, I recommend you buy a map and follow the “Volimes” sign, then the “Shipwreck beach view” one. This will give you the most spectacular panoramic view over the small bay.
Blue Caves, St. Nicolas
The Blue Caves is more a perfect destination for swimming rather than a beach. The trip is accessible by boat that costs only 10 euros. These caves have something special. The captain will take you through the steepest shelters and rock boulders you can think of. The geological formations transformed over the years by air, wind, and rain create a perfect illusion of an art masterpiece, while the rays of the sun that crisscross the blue crystal water is hypnotizing you.
The Gerakas bay is definitely one of the famous places in Zakynthos. Situated in the southern part of the island, this fine sandy coast is renowned for hosting the extinct species of turtles known as Caretta-Caretta. For this reason, tourists are forbidden to be on the beach 30 minutes before sunset and 30 minutes after sunrise. Turtles are one of the symbols of the Zakynthos Island, and in case you see one swimming alongside you shouldn’t be afraid.
Makris Gialos, St.Nicolas
You’ll find it in the middle of St. Nicolas and Katastari areas. Makris Gialos is one of the famous small bays of Zakynthos, being visited especially by those who are not disturbed by the pebbly beach. With turquoise clear water, spectacular views and Greek tavernas, your day will definitely be a perfect one.
Make sure you’ll not miss any of these bays dedicated to tourism. Don’t stop on this list, because Zakynthos has many more famous beaches that will surely influence you to come back.
